A Pioneering Event Held in Ankara with REEsilience

Ankara, Turkey (22.02.2024) – The Rare Earth Elements (REE) International Summit, a landmark event focusing on the critical and strategic field of rare earth elements, successfully took place on February 21-22, 2024, in Ankara. This significant gathering drew together “REE project” beneficiaries, national and international sector participants, and key stakeholders, setting the stage for an extensive exchange of knowledge and innovative technological developments in the rare earth sector.

The summit kicked off with notable opening speeches delivered by distinguished figures such as Mr. Prof. Dr. Kenan PEKER, Rector of Munzur University; Ambassador Mr. Nikolaus Meyer LANDRUT, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Türkiye; and Mr. Mehmet Fatih KACIR, Minister of Industry and Technology of the Republic of Türkiye. Their addresses set a collaborative and forward-looking tone for the event, highlighting the summit’s significance in the global REE landscape.

Throughout the two-day summit, participants were treated to a wealth of information and insights, courtesy of esteemed national and international experts. The discussions delved into critical topics, including the global REE supply chain, associated risks and opportunities, and innovative strategies for recycling REEs from primary and secondary sources. These sessions not only illuminated current challenges but also showcased emerging opportunities within the REE sector.

The event concluded with insightful closing remarks from Mr. Serkan ÇELİK, Deputy General Manager at the Ministry of Industry and Technology, General Directorate of Industry, and Mr. Hilmi AKIN, Deputy Director General of EU and Foreign Affairs, underscoring the summit’s importance and the collaborative efforts needed moving forward.

The REEsilience project was prominently represented by the project ccordnator Prof. Dr. Carlo Burkhardt from the University of Pforzheim, and Nabeel Mancheri from project partner REIA, who shared their insights and the project’s objectives, contributing to the summit’s rich tapestry of knowledge. Burkhardt’s presentation on the REEsilience project highlighted the innovative efforts and strategic importance of sustainable development in the rare earth sector.
