Project Partner HyProMag selected as EU Strategic Project for rare-earth permanent magnet recycling

REEsilience Project Partner HyProMag GmbH has been selected as one of 46 new EU Strategic Projects under the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), marking an important step towards strengthening rare-earth permanent magnet recycling and building more resilient critical raw material value chains in Europe.

The European Commission announced the selection of 46 new Strategic Projects across 16 EU Member States. The projects cover different stages of the critical raw materials value chain, including extraction, processing and recycling. Of particular relevance to REEsilience, four of the selected projects address rare earth elements and will contribute to strengthening Europe’s permanent magnet value chain.

Among the newly selected projects is HyProMag GmbH, based in Germany, which focuses on advancing rare-earth permanent magnet recycling in Europe. Its selection recognises the importance of developing industrial-scale recycling capacity and keeping valuable rare-earth materials within European value chains.

Strengthening Europe’s rare-earth supply chains

The announcement closely aligns with the challenges addressed by REEsilience, which focuses on strengthening the resilience and sustainability of Europe’s rare-earth element and permanent magnet value chains.

Rare-earth permanent magnets are an important component of strategic European value chains. Expanding European recycling and processing capacity can contribute to a more circular supply of these materials while reducing dependencies on individual suppliers.

The new Strategic Projects support the objectives established under the Critical Raw Materials Act. By 2030, the EU aims for its capacity to cover at least 10% of annual consumption through extraction, 40% through processing and 25% through recycling for strategic raw materials.

The Commission states that the newly selected projects, together with the Strategic Projects selected previously, could fully meet the EU’s recycling benchmark for rare earth elements as well as its processing benchmark for rare earth elements.
