SUMMARY:IRTC 2023 – Raw Materials for a Sustainable Future
DESCRIPTION:The IRTC 2023 conference\, 15-17 February in Lille\, is an interactive platform that serves as a compass for material risks in global industry and research. It brings together representatives from industry\, academia and governmental and non-governmental organisations to exchange ideas and applications. Conference sessions will alternate between moderated panel discussions\, lectures and direct exchanges with and between experts. \nIRTC23 will be all about dialogue on raw materials for a sustainable future. Raw materials play an important role in economic and technological development of\, among others\, the renewable & digital transition. At the same time\, supply of many raw materials heavily depends on precarious and unsustainable supply chains. This conference brings together international leading experts\, practitioners and participants\, to exchange perspectives and engage in in-depth discussions on how to assess and manage raw materials and criticality\, and to explore the potential of different strategies to secure supply. Therefore\, IRTC23 welcomes a diverse audience from industry\, academics and policy-making concerned with raw materials for a sustainable future. \nThe global network “International Round Table on Materials Criticality” (IRTC)\, funded by EIT RawMaterials\, has a crucial role in the international debate on criticality. In IRTC\, leading experts and developers of criticality methodologies discuss different perspectives and requirements of robust criticality assessments\, bridging academic expertise and industry practice. \nREEsilience partner REIA will also be part of this event. \nFor more info and registration\, please visit: https://www.irtc-conference.org/

SUMMARY:International E-Waste Day
DESCRIPTION:This year\, the main focus of International E-Waste Day will be those small electrical devices that we no longer use but keep in drawers and cupboards or often toss in the general waste bin. \nSmall\, end of life electrical and electronic appliances present a significant challenge. UN estimated that in 2019\, over 22 million tonnes of small e-waste were produced worldwide. This is 40% of the 57 million tonnes of all e-waste arising globally. If the quantity of these small items keeps on increasing at the same rate as total e-waste (around 3% per annum)\, it will reach 29 million tonnes by 2030. \nDue to their small size\, items such as cell phones\, electric toothbrushes\, toasters and cameras are often discarded incorrectly\, and they make up a significant proportion of the 8% of all e-waste that is thrown in waste bins which is subsequently landfilled or incinerated. This means the important raw materials they contain cannot be extracted and are lost. In Europe\, up to 1.4 kg of e-waste per inhabitant ends up in the general waste bin every year.  On top of this\, small appliances are easily stored and forgotten about in drawers\, cupboards\, garages\, basements and attics. In an average European household\, up to 5 kg of e-devices per person is currently hoarded. \nIn this context it is crucial that people become more aware and that the loss of the important resources these items contain is stopped. This is why the focus of International E-Waste Day (#ewasteday) 2022 will be on small items of e-waste\, under the slogan ‘Recycle it all\, no matter how small!’. \nThe producer responsibility organisations in the WEEE Forum that manage the collection of e-waste are constantly working to make the proper disposal of small e-waste simple and convenient for consumers. Provide collection boxes in supermarkets\, pick up of small broken appliances upon delivery of new ones and offer PO Boxes to return small e-waste are just some of the things they do to encourage the return of these items. \n\n\n\n\n#ewasteday will take place on 14 October 2022 and any e-waste related awareness raising activities are welcome to be part of it: from social media\, TV and radio campaigns to city or school e-waste collections or even artistic performances. \nUse the links on the menu to the left to discover the activities that took place during the previous editions of #ewasteday to understand better how activities unite to raise awareness. \nLast year 172 organisations from 78 countries participated in #ewasteday with many more joining us from around the world. Be part of it this year by registering your activities below! \nFor more information and registration\, please visit the website.

SUMMARY:REIA 2022 Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:Rare Earths for a Sustainable World \n5-6 October 2022 \nCongress Park Hanau – Frankfurt \nRare Earths are critical materials for vehicle electrification and wind turbines. Electric vehicles will only unleash their full environmental benefit when the electricity mix evolves towards a higher renewables content. For that\, wind-power turbines also rely on rare earths’ magnets for highest efficiency and low-maintenance cost. \nDespite their unmatched technological benefits\, rare earths are considered scarce\, their extraction is expensive\, prone to price volatility and their supply chain concentrated in a single country. However\, these perceptions do not entirely correspond to how the rare earths industry has evolved since the very mediatic “Rare Earths Crisis” of 2010. \nNew producers\, better technologies and a fast-growing demand make for a very different picture that requires\, more than ever before\, a strongest collaboration between the rare earths industry\, its industrial customers\, research institutions and governments to ensure these materials deliver on their incredible potential to decarbonize energy and transportation. That’s the key objective of the REIA (Rare Earths Industry Association). This global annual conference on e-motors will bring together key decision makers in the technologies of vehicle electrification\, rare earths producers\, magnet makers\, wind energy companies\, e-drives and vehicle manufacturers to review the current supply situation and identify improvements to better satisfy the requirements of the industrial downstream customers for a better technology adoption. \nREEsilience together with SUSMAGPRO will have a booth at the event. \nFor more information and registration\, please visit the website.

SUMMARY:8th International Conference of S-LCA
DESCRIPTION:The International Conference of Social Life Cycle Assessment is the main event to present current methodological developments and best practices in social life cycle assessment (S-LCA). The 8th edition of the conference will take place in a hybrid format from 5th-8th September 2022 in Aachen\, Germany. The theme chosen for this edition is “Leave No One Behind”\, reflecting the central role that stakeholders play towards social wellbeing. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Leave No One Behind (LNOB) Principle is central to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets\, which are inherently inclusive by design. LNOB represents the unequivocal commitment of all UN Member States to eradicate poverty in all its forms\, end discrimination and exclusion\, and reduce the inequalities and vulnerabilities that leave people behind and undermine the potential of individuals and of humanity as a whole. \nIn many ways\, this principle embraces and has an impact on the three dimensions of sustainable development. Indeed the potential of individuals is heavily affected by their environment\, social and economic conditions. LNOB means addressing these dimensions for each individual.  The principle also closely mirrors the central role that stakeholders play in ensuring wellbeing. On the one hand\, social impacts are measured on stakeholder categories and on the other hand the required expertise\, policies\, technical infrastructure\, methodological development\, data have to be provided by stakeholders. \nTo meaningfully assess social impacts and effect change\, we therefore need governing bodies\, industry\, civil society and academia sitting at the same table. S-LCA 2022 Conference aims to achieve exactly this\, to provide a platform where various stakeholders can be considered and contribute in completing the human wellbeing puzzle. \nFor more informationand registration\, please visit the website.
